38

This chapter continues with the building of the altar (v1-7) in accordance with the pattern laid down by God in Exodus 27:1-8. Next was the bronze laver made from the bronze mirrors given by the women (v8) as instructed in Exodus 30:17-21.

We then come to the court with its pillars, hooks and bands and the linen hangings, the screens and pegs (v9-20) as the pattern was laid down by God in Exodus 27:9-19.

In verses 21-31 we have a list of the workers and inventory of the materials. Ithamar, the son of Aaron was given the responsibility to count the inventory for the Levites who were responsible for the service and managing the materials. Bezalel and Aholiab were in charge. There was the gold (v24); silver (v25-28); the bronze (v29-31). It has been estimated that by present day value it would have amounted to around £14million. Some have questioned as to where they got all this material, but we must remember that when they left Egypt they left with much plunder and the Egyptians gave them much (Exodus 12:36).
