In verses 1-3 the Levites came to Eleazar the priest and Joshua and the heads of the tribes, to ask for their cities and land for their livestock promised by The LORD to Moses. They were given cities and land to dwell in and in verses 4-42 those cities are listed, forty-eight in all with common land. Those cities were obviously not in one place but scattered throughout the land so that they were near to all and available to all. This was vital just as we as followers of Christ should be available to all with the gospel.
All the children of Israel now had their allocation of the whole land so they must now go and take possession of it as God had commanded them (v43), and the LORD had given them rest having delivered their enemies into their hands (v44). The land was theirs for the taking and they did not need to wander anymore.
The chapter finishes with a great word of assurance, “Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.”
The faithfulness of God is evident, He had made provision for all they needed, the land was theirs, any failure to possess the land was Israel’s, not God’s. God had made full provision for them just as he as for us and we must fully follow Him. Satan is a defeated foe because of the cross and we have amazing provision for our lives and power to overcome our difficulties. We are more than conquerors but sadly we often live defeated lives. God has given us all that we need. We must surrender our all to Him an obey His word because we can be sure that not one word of His will fail. What comfort and assurance that should be to us.
