God spoke to Moses and commanded that the Promised Land was theirs as given by God as an inheritance and they were to take it and drive out the Canaanites (v1,2). The borders were prescribed in v 3-12.

Southern border (v3-5) from the Wilderness of Zin, along the border of Edom, eastward to the Salt Sea (Dead Sea), then south to Zin, south of Kadesh Barea, to Hazar Addar, to Azmon, to the brook of Egypt and end at the sea.

Western border (v6) the Mediterranean Sea.

Northern border (v7-9) From the Mediterranean Sea (Great Sea) mark out your borderline to Mount Hor; from Mount Horto the entrance of Hamath; then toward Zedad; proceed to Ziphron, and it shall end at Hazar Enan.

Eastern border (v10-12) – mark out your eastern border from Hazar Enan to Shepham; down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain; down and reach to the eastern side of the Sea of Chinnereth (Galilee); the border shall then go down along the Jordan, and it shall end at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land with its surrounding boundaries.

In Joshua 1:2-4 this is put very succinctly, “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.

Moses said that this was the land which they would inherit, the nine- and one-half tribes. The tribe of Reuben, Gad and half tribe of Manasseh already had their inheritance on the east side of Jordan (v13-15). The Lord told Moses that Eleazar and Joshua were to divide the land (v16,17) as an inheritance among the people. This would not be an easy task hence the two most spiritual men being appointed. They were to appoint a leader from each tribe (v18-29) as commanded by the Lord.
