{"id":907,"date":"2025-01-20T07:47:49","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T07:47:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/simplemanswalkthroughthebible.org\/?p=907"},"modified":"2025-01-31T04:26:04","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T04:26:04","slug":"1-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simplemanswalkthroughthebible.org\/?p=907","title":{"rendered":"1"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em><em>After the death of&nbsp;<a>Moses<\/a>&nbsp;the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses\u2019 assistant, saying: \u201cMoses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>(v1-3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is always a good place to start \u2013 listening to the voice of&nbsp;<a>The<\/a>&nbsp;LORD. He had been faithful as Moses\u2019 assistant and now he is to lead this&nbsp;<a>great number<\/a>&nbsp;of people. He must have known that this was an onerous task, particularly after experiencing the&nbsp;<a>ups and downs<\/a>&nbsp;of the past years, and how Moses had become so exasperated with the people complaining against him and God. God\u2019s promise is still the same to Joshua as it was to Moses \u2013&nbsp;<em>\u201cEvery place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>God could have given them the land and they could have walked straight into it, but they had to fight for it and drive the enemies out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God restates the promise&nbsp;<em>\u2013 \u201cFrom the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. No man shall&nbsp;be able to&nbsp;stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses,&nbsp;so&nbsp;I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>(v4,5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a precise&nbsp;<a>area<\/a>&nbsp;and it had boundaries and God assures Joshua of victory, but there were conditions \u2013 \u201c<em>Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may&nbsp;<a>observe<\/a>&nbsp;to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God&nbsp;is&nbsp;with you wherever you go.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>(v6-9)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joshua is assured that God is with him, and he must put his faith in God, and be strong and courageous. God\u2019s law must be obeyed, and he was to meditate on that&nbsp;<a>law day<\/a>&nbsp;and night and observe it, put it into practice and only then would he have good success. Obeying God\u2019s word gives success because it helps us to deal with all that life throws against us, not because of us but because of Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joshua seems to waste no time in telling the officers what to do&nbsp;\u2013 \u201c<em>Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, \u201cPass through the camp and command the people, saying, \u2018Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>(v10,11)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparation was necessary, they would need provisions. Joshua instructs the officers to go through the camp and to command the people to make those provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joshua told the Reubenites, the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh to&nbsp;\u201c<em>Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, \u2018The LORD your God is giving you rest and is giving you this land.\u2019 Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But you shall pass before your brethren armed, all your mighty men of valour, and help them, until the LORD has given your brethren rest, as He&nbsp;gave&nbsp;you, and they also have taken possession of the land which the LORD your God is giving them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD\u2019s servant gave you on this side of the Jordan toward the sunrise.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>(V12-15)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These tribes asked to be able to settle on the east side of the Jordan which had already&nbsp;<a>been conquered<\/a>. Their families would stay on the eastern side in their lands whilst the fighting men were to go over the Jordan and help their brethren to take possession of the land on the west and then they could return to their lands on the eastern side.&nbsp;<a>It seems that it<\/a>&nbsp;was thought that this shouldn\u2019t take long but I wonder how long they actually stayed before going home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lesson is made clear to us as Christians that we should help each other when in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The people gave Joshua their answer and on the face of it it sounded assuring,&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<\/strong><em>All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you. Only the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses. Whoever rebels against your command and does not heed your words, in all that you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>(V16-18)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that these two and a half tribes were united in their willingness to obey and help their brothers to conquer the land over the Jordan. For Joshua to hear them say that they would obey him just as they did Moses must have given him mixed feelings. They hadn\u2019t always listened to and obeyed Moses but maybe this was different! They even go to the lengths of saying that they would deal with any who do not obey, and they confirm the LORD\u2019s words, \u201c<em>Only be strong and of good courage\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cAfter the death of&nbsp;Moses&nbsp;the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses\u2019 assistant, saying: \u201cMoses My servant is dead.
