{"id":2083,"date":"2026-11-06T07:18:29","date_gmt":"2026-11-06T07:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/simplemanswalkthroughthebible.org\/?p=2083"},"modified":"2026-11-06T07:18:30","modified_gmt":"2026-11-06T07:18:30","slug":"5-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simplemanswalkthroughthebible.org\/?p=2083","title":{"rendered":"5"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cRemember, O LORD, what has come upon us; Look, and behold our reproach! Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, and our houses to foreigners. We have become orphans and <a>waifs,<\/a> our mothers are like widows. We pay for the water we drink, and our wood comes at a price. They pursue at our heels; We labour and have no rest. We have given our hand to the Egyptians and the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their iniquities. <a>Servants<\/a> rule over us; There is none to deliver us from their hand.\u201d<\/em> (v1-8)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah clearly knew why they were in this calamity, but he felt that maybe God had forgotten them, so, he prayed that God would look upon them. He was distressed at their condition, the loss of families, their inheritance to the hands of foreigners. They were having to pay for their water and the wood, apparently over the odds. As we saw in chapter 4, they had put their hope in the Egyptians to no avail. He even asked for the Assyrians to help, but we understand that they had ceased to be an empire long ago. What desperation! Maybe they had previous alliances with them, but now it was useless. None of these people could deliver them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah quoted a well-known proverb of his day, found in Ezekiel 18:2 and his own book Jeremiah 32:29,30, \u2018Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear our iniquities\u2019. The idea was that God was unfair in that their fathers were not suffering for their iniquities, but God was punishing their generation unfairly. The truth was that Ezekiel was saying that all individuals whether dead or alive bear their punishment, thus, the proverb <a>wasn\u2019t<\/a> true. Society was turned upside down in that servants, lowly men, were ruling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe get our bread&nbsp;at the risk&nbsp;of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. Our skin is hot as an oven, because of the fever of famine. They ravished the women in Zion, the maidens in the cities of Judah. Princes were hung up by their hands, and elders were not respected. Young men ground at the millstones; Boys staggered under&nbsp;loads of&nbsp;wood. The elders have ceased&nbsp;gathering at&nbsp;the gate, and the young men from their music. The joy of our heart has ceased; Our dance has turned into mourning. The crown has fallen&nbsp;from&nbsp;our head.\u201d<\/em> (v9-16).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continues that last theme in that elders were not respected, and princes were being hung up by their hands in punishment, all were suffering. Women ravished in the streets, boys made to carry heavy loads, young men grinding at the mill. The elders no longer gathered at the gates of the city which was where justice was often discussed and important decisions made. Joy turned into mourning. All because society had been turned on its head. They had to fight for bread, and they were stricken by famine. Life had become unbearable. They had to go for necessities at the risk of their lives. Young men were now doing the work which women used to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again Jeremiah confessed that this was all because of their sin \u2013 \u201c<em>Woe to us, for we have sinned! Because of this our heart is faint; because of these&nbsp;things&nbsp;our eyes grow dim; because of Mount <a>Zion<\/a> which is desolate, with foxes walking about on it.\u201d<\/em> (v16-18). Their place had become desolate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cYou, O LORD, remain forever; Your throne from generation to generation. Why do You forget us forever, and&nbsp;forsake us for so long a time? Turn us back to You, O LORD, and we will be restored; Renew our days as of old, Unless You have utterly rejected us, and&nbsp;are very angry with us!\u201d<\/em> (v19,22)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah falls on his knees before God and recognises who God is, and pleads with Him not to forget them forever, and to turn them back to Him. He knows that God can restore them, and renew them, unless His anger has caused Him to reject them forever. He has faith and confidence in his God. He even thought that God would forsake them and leave them forever, but underlying that is his trust in an unchanging God. It may have seemed that God had forsaken them, but deep, down, Jeremiah had trust. He knew that the only way was for God to turn back to them (v21) if they wanted to be restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One commentator stated succinctly that, \u201cIn a last brief and yet forceful word, he prayed Jehovah to turn the people unto Himself. This he introduced by a declaration of his confidence in the perpetual enthronement of Jehovah. It was a cry which recognized the last helplessness of man, namely, his inability even to repent.\u201d \u201cThere is nothing better than to adopt the cry of the prophet, and ask God to turn the soul, and renew its blessed and holy experiences. There will be no doubt of our being turned, if He turns us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we are turned back to God, we can trust Him to renew us. However far we have gone away from Him, He will draw us back and renew our days. The parable of the prodigal son shows us that in Luke 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite his trust in God, Jeremiah still is concerned that God may have rejected them completely and was still angry with them. However, as we read the Bible, we see that God\u2019s anger was not permanent. Whilst God\u2019s wrath is against sin, the modern song says, \u2018Our sins which are many, His mercy is more.\u2019 We must come in repentance to receive God\u2019s forgiveness. We all deserve His wrath, but the Lord Jesus Christ bore the wrath of His Father on the cross for those who will confess and repent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was right for Jeremiah and his <a>countrymen<\/a> to lament over their situation, just as it is for us, but it should not end there, rather, there must be repentance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cRemember, O LORD, what has come upon us; Look, and behold our reproach!
