It tells us how Titus was to teach the various groups in the church. Verse 1 begins with, “But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine:”

Now that sounds heavy theological stuff, but it is not at all, it is very practical. It is right thinking and right living; the kind of living that produces right thinking. The Bible is a very practical book; it is not just theory. Often, we don’t like to be told how to live, but we need to hear how God expects us to live. Much of what Jesus taught was just that, how to live. The sermon on the mount was full of it. We can often get bogged down with deep theological things, but these are not so, and note carefully, these are referred to as solid doctrine, and this doctrine covers all age ranges, without exception. It also tells us that we all have a responsibility live as God wants us to live.

You might say, I don’t need anyone to tell me how to live my life. Believe it or not, we do, and especially God. Some might say that it is nobody else’s business how I live my life. These verses tell us the opposite, and it’s not just someone else’s opinion, it is what God says, and there is no greater authority on life, because He made us.

“That the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;” (v2)

It is just the same today that older men may object to younger men telling them how to live, but Titus had to teach them, thus, it is clear that what follows does not automatically come with age. The older men may have much to teach us, but they need teaching too.

I understand that the word ‘old’ only appears twice in the New Testament in this context, one is Simeon in Luke 1 and the other is Paul himself in Philemon, and he would have been mid to late sixties approximately as I have suggested elsewhere. He is not referring to the elders, and I believe that in that in the time of writing it would refer to those men of the age of forty and over. It certainly indicated maturity, and you know as well as I do that maturity is not limited to age.

Sober – temperate/sober-minded. Clear in mind, not easily angered, and not under the influence of alcohol or passion.

Reverent – dignified and grave. Worthy of respect, a character which reflects a life focused on God’s purposes, self-controlled and sensible.

Sound in faith – firmly grounded in the Word of God and Christian principles, with a deep love for the Lord.

Sound in love – acting out of a sincere love for the Lord and fellow believers.

In patience – steadfast in whatever life’s throws at them. Holding to the faith even in difficult situations. Patience is not passive waiting, not just waiting around however patiently, but active endurance

Next, what to teach the older women (v3,4) – “The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—that they admonish the young women.”

Reverent in behaviour- behaviour indicates more than just words, but dress and character, their deportment. Their conduct must indicate their holy life.

Not slanderers – is dealing with their words, and slander comes from the same word used for ‘devils.’ That is very pointed, thus, to slander someone is doing the work of the devil. Slander is false accusing. See my thoughts on slander in 1 Timothy 3.

Not given to much wine – indicates a common failing among older women in Roman and Greek culture. In those days wine was used to dull pain, thus, it was common for it to be abused, even to dull the senses and a danger to be enslaved to it. The physical and psychological addictive qualities of alcohol still make it dangerous today, but now there are many other drugs that must be added to the list. If a person wants to escape reality there is no need to do so. The Bible is the answer.” All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.” (1 Corinthians 6:12)

I have written at length on the dangers of alcohol. I am not going to go into details here, but anyone wishing to contact me about this is welcome.

These last two matters seemed to be prominent in the culture on Crete, more than in Ephesus, where Timothy was ministering, and it seemed to be more so in the women. One commentator said that the reference to being given to much wine was actually being slaves to it.

Teachers of good things – the older women had the privilege of teaching the younger women. The word used is ‘admonish’ using their wisdom and experience. Their behaviour, as outlined in v3, would equip them to be able to teach the younger women in the things of life. They would have a good foundation and be examples, a positive role model to the younger women. Note that the older women were responsible for teaching the young women. It was not for Titus to teach them, rather he was to equip the older women to do it. There was no reason why the younger women should not listen to his teaching, but it was safer for the older women to teach them the basic sound foundations.

“The young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.” (v4,5)

They were to teach them to love their husbands and to love their children, thus it begins at home. These are basics but vitally important. This is to culture family relationships which are vital to a sound church family. Love must dominate the home and show in relationships, and Paul says it must be taught. One would think it should be inborn but often, and especially today, it isn’t and needs to be taught. It is not easy to nurture marriage and children these days; there are so many distractions and different voices telling us what to do, and they are not all beneficial. Beware of the standards of our society in this area. The love of a mother is not to be defined in fuzzy feelings and words, but rather a firm but gentle hand that guides, corrects, comforts, cares, and nurtures.

There are lots of things called ‘love’ today and they are not all what the Bible calls ‘love.’ The highest aspect of love is the self sacrifice of Jesus, and this often does not come naturally and needs to be taught. Husbands and wives are to love each other just as Christ has loved us, and that is a tall order. Loving children is easy in some ways, but they can also be a lot of work and bring frustration that makes you want you to pull your hair out. The difficulty is reflected in the need for women to learn to do it from older, godly women.

One commentator writes – ladies, to love your husband and love your children you must reject the selfish teachings of feminism which permeates our culture. You must learn to be humble and unselfish. Your first love is to be Jesus. If you are married, your second love is to be your husband. If you have children, they are your third love. You come only after them.

They were also to be taught to be discreet – the word seems to mean sensible, self-controlled. Chaste – the word here primarily refers to moral purity. It includes modesty and sense of shame at saying or doing anything that might cause a man to lust (see 1 Timothy 2:9,10).

Immature young women sometimes try to attract attention by inappropriate dress. I’ve mentioned elsewhere, a preacher who said, ‘Ladies dress attractively but not seductively.’ Proverbs 11:22 says, “As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.” Older, godly women would have learned the lesson and could teach the younger women. If she has not mastered that the older woman will not be classed as godly and not be able to teach the younger women.

Thirdly, they were to teach the younger women to be homemakers. Paul is stressing that the priority is the family. To be busy at home. Keeping the home is enough for most people. The KJV states ‘keepers at home,’ or guards of the home. Some feminists say that the home is a place of bondage. In these days of equality many women believe it is their right to go out to work just like men. Our society has suffered greatly because of this. There is no question of inequality, rather it is different roles. The home is the place where children are nurtured and taught, instilling in them a godly character. It is difficult to go out to work and keep home, bringing up children as well.

I think it was chairman Mao Tse Tung or Aristotle who said give me a child until he is five and you can have him for the rest of his life. I think the Jesuits say something similar probably seven years. Those first formative years are the most important years of a child’s life. It is known fact that a child learns more in pre-school years than the rest of its life. A child needs mother at her best not after she has done a days’ work outside. One has said that she needs to be a superwoman to do both effectively. What is more important – a better standard of living or a young life properly taught and trained for life. Training is the thought mentioned in the book of Proverbs and has merit and worth giving thought to. Trainers are important for sports teams and many other organisations but rarely thought of in connection with the home which is the foundation for society as a whole.

‘Give Me A Child Until He Is 7: Brain Studies And Early Childhood Education’. Book by John Brierley represents the essence of talks given to parents, teachers of nursery infants, teachers, to show the young brain’s flexibility, resilience, and potential to highlight the importance of the early years for later development.

It is a great responsibility to train a child, therefore, not something which can be easily passed to a child minder, a nursery and certainly not the television, which sadly, has become a modern child minder, even when parents are at home. I admire those who homeschool their children although it is no easy task and may have some drawbacks. It is probably a preferable alternative to some schools, but great care is needed to shield our children completely. I attended a church school and then a grammar school after passing the 11+. The latter was anything but a spiritual experience although we did have assembly each day with a hymn and a prayer. My wife also attended a church school and then a Secondary school with very little spiritual input. Our two sons attended secular schools and high schools with little or no spiritual input. Both are in responsible jobs. All of us made a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ but that was largely because we were taught the bible at home and at church.

The home is where a wife can demonstrate her love for her husband, for her children by providing a refuge from the world. If you genuinely want to provide the best for your husband and children in a desire to obey and honour the Lord, we can be sure that He will provide the needed wisdom and ability.

Proverbs 14:1 says, “The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her own hands.” Are you building your house or tearing it down?

Now I know that some mothers do have to go out to work, mine did. She was widowed three months before I was born, but she tried get work to fit around bringing me up, to fit in with her work in the home. My grandmother played a large hand in this for which I was very grateful. From my work experience in the courts, the majority of young people who fell into crime came from homes where the parents both went out to work or didn’t want to work and lived on benefits.

The final two things to be taught to the younger women by the older women were to be good and subject to their own husbands.

Here we might feel the heckles rise. Do you really mean a wife has to be subject to her husband? In various places the Bible states this. Never forget that the husband’s responsibility is huge. They must love their wives as they love their own bodies (Ephesians 5:28) most husbands have little difficulty in looking after themselves. They are to dwell with their wives according to knowledge and give honour to her as the weaker vessel (1 Peter 3:7). Weaker vessel indeed! It is clear that there is nothing weak about this submission. It is not a wrestling match submission where one is pinned to the floor. We must both be willing to submit to Christ and there is nothing weak about that. Submission must be a willing submission. The highest responsibility is the husband’s who must love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it (Colossians 3:19 and Ephesians 5:25-27). There is no higher standard of love than that.

What about the final phrase tells us why those things are to be taught – “…. that the word of God may not be blasphemed.”

If this sound doctrine is not obeyed, we make the Word of God to be evil spoken of or maligned, blasphemed or made of non-effect. What an astounding statement! If we put that alongside the statement in 1 Peter 3:7 which concludes that if we don’t fulfil our roles as husband and wife, our prayers will be hindered. The two must important assets to the Christian life, prayer and the Word of God are affected and made ineffective if we do not.

What are the older men to do? They are to teach the younger men (v6-8)

“Likewise exhort the young men to be sober-minded.”

The word ‘likewise’ indicates that there is not much difference between what the women and the men must be taught, it is essentially godly living.’ To be careful and take life seriously, which is not always easy for young men who might be carefree. This is the only command for the older men to teach the younger men, but it covers the whole scope of wise living. It is to do with the mind under control.

Then comes the reasoning behind the teaching – “In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.”

Titus was to be an example just as the older men should. An example in doctrine with integrity, settled and knowing the Scriptures so that he and they could teach them to the younger men. Reverence, incorruptibility and sound speech so that no-one could condemn them and they would be embarrassed to have to say nothing evil of them. None could point the finger at them. People love to do that and pick us up at the slightest thing, but if they can’t those finger-pointers will be ashamed of themselves. Note that it says, ‘in all things’ so, it is not just limited to doctrine but every aspect of godly living, be an example.

Interestingly he has much more to say about servants. I assume that in their community there would lots of slaves and while it seems to be restricted to servants, in one sense, we are all servants, so, it could apply to us all.

“Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.” (v9,10)

The Christian faith probably shocked the outside world as slaves and masters mixed together in the church, and a slave might even be an elder. The Bible does not approve of and neither does it condemn slavery. It merely regulates the custom and how such should be treated. I know of some families where they had servants, and those servants were treated extremely well and were quite satisfied in their role.

Slaves were to be obedient to their own masters. Colossians 4:1 tells us how masters were to treat their slaves. Master and slave have an equal standing before God. Leviticus 25 tells us how they were to be treated in Old Testament and Exodus 21 shows us that a slave was to be offered his freedom after six years, but they could stay if they wished. Some were treated so well that they didn’t want to go free. The New Testament, whilst not overturning slavery, emphasised their spiritual equality whether slave or master. Often the master had paid a considerable sum of money for a slave and for one to go free meant a huge loss, but they must be treated with respect and fairness. (See Philemon). In the Bible we see that many slaves/servants were given great responsibilities with their master’s goods and family (see Eliezer who was sent by Abraham to find a wife for Isaac – Genesis 24) (and Joseph, a slave in Potiphar’s house (Genesis 39:4-6)

Just as a slave was to obey his own master, we are to obey our master, The God of heaven.

Servants were to be taught to be well-pleasing in everything, not to answer back and not to steal from their master’s house (the word ‘pilfering’ is used here) no doubt it would be easy for many if they were in a position of responsibility and had access to the master’s house and possessions.

Those of us who have been employees are in exactly the same position as servants, and we are to behave well, to be obedient and not to use our employer’s property as if it were our own. We can be guilty of using work’s time for our own things and, in effect, stealing from them. We can be guilty of this in all sorts of ways by using things without permission. Our character must be impeccable, and this is not always easy. Remember the words of Joseph when he was lured and tempted by Potiphar’s wife, ‘My master has put all things under my control, except you’ (see Genesis 39) As a result, he was falsely accused by her and wrongfully put in prison. However, God was with him there and, again, he was given responsibility there)

Paul simply says that our behaviour will adorn, show the beauty of the gospel which we live by, and show to all the beauty and wonder of the Lord we serve. We may not be happy with the way the world treats us, but we must live above it and show the world that there is a better way to live, and it only comes through a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. This is displayed in changed lives; lives which once were marred by sin but now glorifying the One who has changed our lives.

God’s unmerited favour (grace) brings salvation to all men. The only true salvation is through the Lord Jesus Christ; there is no other way. “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,” (v11) No-one is outside the scope and reach of the grace of God.

This grace not only saves us, but it teaches us how to live – “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ,” (v12,13)

I like the NIV for v12, it simply says, “It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age,”

I understand that the word used for ‘teaching’ includes the entire training process: teaching, encouragement, correction, and discipline. Grace is a teacher in this sense. Remember that this is sound doctrine (v1) but so practical.

God’s grace teaches not only to say ‘No’ to these things but to avoid them, by living godly lives. Many say that the Christian is one who doesn’t do this and that. In some ways that is true, but it isn’t all negative, which is often necessary, but positive in that it helps us to live right, self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the face of this present evil age. It ends with words of encouragement that we have a blessed future with the Lord Jesus Christ when he appears in all his glory, when we shall see him face to face. We are not just to wait for it, but to look for it with eager anticipation, and we can only do that if we are in Christ. If we are not, it will be a dreadful day.

One commentator says of the phrase, ‘Our great God’: that this is the only place in the New Testament in which ‘Megas’ is applied to the true God. President Trump says MAGA – make America great again, but that is nothing compared to the Great God we have through our Lord Jesus Christ.

This Great God – “…. gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” (v14). What an amazing statement that is!

That is the work of the Lord Jesus Christ who gave Himself for us to redeem us. Redemption means to pay the ransom to bring us out of slavery, we who were slaves to sin. We were bought and purchased for His service.

We have been redeemed from every lawless deed. Not just some but all our lawless deeds. The death of Jesus was for our forgiveness and justification, which we receive at conversion, but also for our sanctification, which takes a lifetime but should be happening day by day, and the power of our sin. God is purifying us his own special people. What a privilege to have His power to help us day by day to overcome the sins that so easily beset us and give us a zeal for righteousness.

“Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.” (v15)

These things were to be taught fearlessly and with authority, not our own authority, but God’s authority. We are all to do the same. The authority has not changed because God has not changed. Note the last phrase, “Let no one despise you” – this can only be if what we do matches up with what we say. We must be an example. People can only point the finger if we are in consistent.
